Welcome, travelers! During my travels to Istanbul, Turkey, I discovered a place that completely captivated me: Ortaköy. Among all the highly recommended attractions, this charming spot stood out as my favorite.

If you’re planning to visit Istanbul soon or are already exploring the city, chances are high that you’ve created a list of places to see. And most likely, that list includes Taksim Square. Taksim Square is undoubtedly one of the most visited attractions by travelers, along with the Sultan Ahmet region. These places hold great historical value and are packed with tourists.

Today, I want to offer you an alternative: Ortaköy.

Ortaköy is located right by the Marmara Sea and features a stunning mosque situated next to the water. What makes this place special is the popular dish called kumpir, which you can find at numerous stands lining the streets. In fact, there are about 20 kumpir vendors side by side! Ortaköy also has a charming street market filled with locals selling handmade jewelry, clothing items, and unique bags.

If you’ve already been to Taksim Square, you may have noticed how restaurant workers often call out to tourists, trying to entice them inside. A similar experience awaits you in Ortaköy, but the atmosphere here is much calmer, with fewer crowds and fresh sea air. Unlike Taksim’s straight roads, Ortaköy feels like a labyrinth, with surprises waiting around every corner—whether it’s a souvenir stand, a kumpir vendor, or a cozy restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea.

This lesser-known gem is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter alternative to Istanbul’s busier attractions. Ortaköy offers fewer tourists, a peaceful ambiance, sea breezes, and the delicious experience of eating kumpir—a baked potato stuffed with toppings of your choice.

One unique detail: If you’ve enjoyed the playful ice cream vendors in Taksim who perform tricks with their cones, you’ll be happy to know you can find the same experience in Ortaköy!

Another bonus is the ferry station in Ortaköy, which can take you to Istanbul’s Anatolian (Asian) side.

My Recommended Itinerary for Ortaköy:

  1. Visit the Ortaköy Mosque:
    • The mosque, located right by the sea, is a must-see. Keep in mind that it’s customary to wear a headscarf when entering, and you’ll need to remove your shoes. Bring your own scarf to avoid being overcharged, but if you need to buy one, don’t hesitate to bargain.
  2. Take a Walk by the Sea:
    • Enjoy the serene views and the relaxing sea breeze.
  3. Try Kumpir with a Sea View:
    • Head to a café or stand with a terrace and indulge in kumpir while admiring the Marmara Sea.
  4. Explore the Street Market:
    • Browse handmade items and souvenirs, but always remember to negotiate prices.
  5. Take a Ferry to the Asian Side (Optional):
    • If you’re feeling adventurous, hop on a ferry for a scenic ride to Istanbul’s Asian side.

Ortaköy offers a unique blend of local culture, tasty food, and picturesque views. I miss eating the kumpir and exploring its cozy streets, and I hope to visit again soon!
